Sites of Resistance
In truth, death always leaves something behind. A loved one. A Hi8 Tape. An intent to preserve their memory. Following the sudden death of his wife Rob (54) takes his daughter on journey to explore an invisible network of ‘stopping places’ that connect the travelling routes he and his wife use to take to earn a living in the early 1990s. Now its grief alone that connects them. These pieces of land scattered around England and Wales, are insignificant to passers by but remain in the collective cultural memory of many British Romani Traveller families. What comfort can they hold? If they could speak, what would they say? What secrets would they reveal as witnesses? Many now have large boulders or ditches dug to prevent them coming back. Through the changing landscapes the filmmaker explores her father’s past and her mothers memory. Together; they are confronted with the question of what these stopping places represent for the future.
